The little flower lives in the corner of the garden. Can she survive the dangers that she meets there?

‘…they’ve engaged with the pictures, and it’s the detail, like the roots, and you can say, well we’ve talked about growing, and roots going down and shoots going up. And it was all there for us to build on what we were teaching at the same time. We loved it as a book, it was REALLY LOVELY!’ Mrs A Jones, Reception/KS1 teacher, Picknall’s First School, Uttoxeter, Staffordshire

‘I could look at these lovely pictures for hours and still see something new. There’s a little parcel of joy on every page. You see something and it just makes you smile.’ Beth Harding, Library manager, Ashbourne, Derbyshire

‘Love this book! When people come into contact with Flower Power! they become part of it - it's theirs. It would be good for both story time and EYFS/Y1/Y2 curriculum support. Really like the music – definitely gives it the feeling that it is a whole ‘package.’’ Liz Gardener, Stock, Services & Activities Officer, Burton Staffordshire Libraries and Arts Service

'Flower Power! is a disarmingly simple story, thoughtfully told and beautifully illustrated. Yet this short book uses universal symbols and widely shared experiences to speak powerfully and directly of the transforming power of love in our lives...I warmly commend Caroline Wedd's parable; born of deep personal experience, it can encourage each one of us in our growth towards fulness of life.'  Rt Revd Dr Michael Ipgrave OBE, Bishop Of Lichfield

Feedback from Teachers

PSHE

Listen to feedback from teacher Angie and her class of children at Crich Carr C of E Primary School, Derbyshire.

‘As part of our PSHE and Emotional Education we’ve talked about the story and what it means, and the children have started to make links to ‘that could be my life and actually my teachers are helping me and people are helping me and I’m OK as I am and not a bad person.’ which has been really nice.’ Wendy Leiter, Holway Primary School, Taunton, Devon

‘It’s a lovely book, the pictures – are beautiful – but the actual text, and the message, there’s quite a lot of different themes that come out of it really. And I think it is a very powerful book because of that. We’d definitely use it again, I think it’s very useful; for the younger children it’s a simple story and you can talk about it on a basic level, but with the older ones you can explain those concepts the book is putting across in more detail, using it like an idea, something to take discussion further about how we relate to each other and how we live our lives, really.’ Jo Lovatt, Sheffield, KS2 Teacher

St Paul's CE (C) Primary School, Stafford, Staffordshire, 17th June 2022.

Caroline read Flower Power! to children from class 3, shared the story behind the story with them and answered lots and lots of questions! The children were particularly interested in talking about how the book was illustrated, and went on to create their own 'Decorative Calligraphy' and 'Feelings Flowers' exploring the links between emotions, feelings and colour association; an open, in depth, discussion followed as the children shared their work at the end of the session -  everybody vowed to believe in themselves come what may!

My Finished Work!

St Paul's CE (C) Primary School, Stafford, Staffordshire, 15th July 2022.

On a return visit, children shared their creative work with Caroline and each other. The children had independently written and illustrated their own picture storybooks exploring the themes of caring and resilience - the results were stunning as you can see!

EYFS

'The children loved doing all sorts of craft activities, they loved the songs as well as the music and movement aspects with our colourful scarves. In early years it is easy to take different aspects of Flower Power! and just run with it for a short or a long time. I would like to use Flower Power! again in the spring and summer terms when we will be setting up our environmental area; in the spring it will also be possible to look at making Easter gardens.'  Mrs A Evans, Reception class teacher.

'We could easily have done another week on it, there's a lot in the resources that we only touched the surface of.' Mrs Jodie Jones, Headteacher

'Our Year 1/Year 2 class really enjoyed it, we did lots of different activities and we linked it to RE; the children got a lot from it - they loved the illustrations, especially the last page with the lovely flower.' Eleanor McColl Year 1/Year 2 class teacher.

PSHE

'I used the lyrics of Just Because for PSHE; we listened to the lyrics, talked about what they meant to us, what love meant to us and the affect that the lyrics had on us.' Jodie Jones, Headteacher with Class 3

Year 5 & 6: 'We talked about bullying and looked at the red watering can character. The children were immediately making links with other books so I know that Flower Power! is something that we will come back to. The children could really see and classify this evil, hard done to, nasty red watering can compared to the children in the story who were kind and caring. We talked a lot about words and the power of people's words and actions, so this for us was really, really good and in terms of being able to dig that bit deeper, we did some writing and looked at personifying the characters - the children really got in to it, they thought it was great. The children were able to make the leap from 'actually, it's a red watering can' to 'actually, it's someone who is bullied, someone who is suffering and it is someone who is pouring out their hurt onto somebody else.' It's been a great project.' Mrs Julia Wells, Year 5 & 6 class teacher.

Creativity

‘We liked the simplicity of the illustrations, it looks like it’s been drawn for you for that book rather than just mass produced. We liked that approach.’ Mrs Angela Jones, Picknall’s First School, Uttoxeter, Staffordshire

‘I absolutely love the pictures, they’re all so bright and colourful, and also they’re the sort of thing that children can look at and think possibly they could ‘have a go themselves’. Mrs Linda Hack, Headteacher, now retired, FitzHerbert C of E Primary School, Fenny Bentley, Derbyshire.

Flower Power Book Sensory Garden

Welcome to our volunteers Jayne Taylor & Susan Maiden-Dalton

Jayne Taylor's Flower Power! knitted garden

Creativity is for children and grown ups!

Our lovely volunteer Jayne was inspired to create her own knitted version of Flower Power! after seeing the book, complete with red, green and yellow watering cans. Jayne and fellow lovely volunteer Susan Maiden-Dalton are taking Jayne's knitted garden into early years classes and nursery schools to give children a sensory garden experience where they can touch, sing and dance the story.

Please get in touch here if you would like to organise a sensory garden visit.

Science

Listen to feedback from Deputy Headteacher Michelle Price at Chaucer Infant School, Ilkeston, Derbyshire.

‘They enjoyed the story and linked it to what they had been learning in Science about plants. They were intrigued by the illustrations especially the cross section showing the plant’s roots and the illustrations prompted lots of discussion. They noted how a new bird was added to each page and loved the final illustration of the flower in full bloom.’ Katy Grocott, Early Years/KS1/KS2 teacher, St Peter’s School, Marchington, Staffordshire

‘…they’ve engaged with the pictures, and it’s the detail, like the roots, and you can say, well we’ve talked about growing, and roots going down and shoots going up. And it was all there for us to build on what we were teaching at the same time. We loved it as a book, it was REALLY LOVELY!’ Mrs Angela Jones, Reception/KS1 teacher, Picknall’s First School, Uttoxeter, Staffordshire

Mathematics

'The children loved going out and using the materials they found outside. I saw lesson five too late as we had just done measuring, but I can see it fitting in really well; we do a lot of measuring things on a sheet, but to measure from real life would be really good. We have collected a lot of wild flowers, like dandelions, which the children could have measured; I can see this lesson working really well.' Mrs Anna Jones, Deputy Headteacher, Mickleover Primary School, Derby.

 Leaver’s Assembly

‘It’s a lovely idea with the flower and the growing - you can even weave it into an end of year ‘Leaver’s Assembly’, flowering and going off to the next school, so the general consensus was that it was a lovely book. We were particularly taken with the illustrations; we felt they were very original…we loved it! It’s gone down really well.’ Mrs Angela Jones, Reception/KS1 teacher, Picknall’s First School, Uttoxeter, Staffordshire

Art & Design/Design & Technology

‘…we’ve decided to do a performance of it. So they’ve been making little head dresses where they’ve made bands of card, cut out petals and leaves and things which they really enjoyed making so there was that whole DT/Art link, and now they’re excited about doing the show.’ Wendy Leiter, Holgate Primary School, Taunton, Devon
