‘The children loved Flower Power! they really loved it, and loved the music. They loved the detail of the illustrations and were enthralled by the story which linked directly to what they’re doing in Science right now. They were really impressed by it all. I thought it was marvellous - thank you!’ Katy Grocott, Early Years/KS1/KS2 teacher, St Peter’s School, Marchington, Staffordshire.

Flower Power Book is delighted to introduce a brand new resource for EYFS, KS1 & KS2:

A Teacher's Guide

Stretch, Smile and Grow, our Flower Power Book Teacher's Guide (£9.99) is a curriculum enrichment, PSHE, mental health and wellbeing resource which provides everything you need in one place; it comprises 252 pages of suggestions for activities and accompanying worksheets which can be used in the following ways:

        • As weekly lessons for PSHE (6 week blocks)
        • Whole school community project
  • Small group work or one-to-one nurture/emotional support
  • A resource to dip into, as and when required
  • Leaver's Assembly/Transition
  • Collective Worship
  • KS1 Musical

Stretch, Smile and Grow includes a series of PSHE lessons (seven lessons in each topic area); these resources include discussion points and activities which can be completed together on your interactive classroom whiteboard, or you can use the printable worksheets. It is hoped that the questions and discussion points are sufficiently generic that they can connect with children on any level from EYFS/KS1, but also encourage more challenging interpretations by KS2 children.

Relevant songs and music tracks are listed on the contents pages as an optional extra; the instrumental tracks can enhance reflective activities, mindfulness and relaxation; listeni

ng to some of the song lyrics may encourage further depth of discussion - or your children may simply enjoy dancing to and singing the songs!

Topic areas covered in the Stretch, Smile and Grow PSHE Series are:

  • Resilience
  • Respect
  • Self-Control
  • Kindness
  • Honesty
  • Forgiveness

‘Again, with the PSHE the children loved it…the link with the perseverance was really good because we had our ‘world of work’ week as well when we were looking at this, and we were looking at not giving up on things you want to do for the future. So for Year 1’s it linked really well, talking to them about what perseverance means, not giving up, not being afraid and with ‘people who help us’. It gave lots of opportunity to talk about feelings, about things they might be worried about, like transition into Year 2.’  Mrs Anna Jones, Deputy Headteacher, Mickleover Primary School, Derby

'These resources are excellent  - they are so easy to use in the classroom, with clear questions that lead through the lessons beautifully.' W Leiter, Class teacher, St Paul's C of E Primary School, Stafford.

'This is a lovely resource to support teaching about compassion and resilience. It contains plenty of ideas to help teachers use the beautiful illustrations to open up conversations with pupils to explore what it means to be emotionally healthy. Supported with music and plenty of additional materials, teachers will find this a very helpful addition to their work on PSHE, religious education, music and creativity.' Mary Myatt, Educator, Keynote Speaker and Author [www.marymyatt.com

Inclusion

Flower Power! is accessible to all. The 'flower' is a universal symbol; all children can relate to the character of the 'Little Flower' regardless of race, gender, sex, disability, religion or belief. However disabled, whatever their special educational needs, a child can still experience Flower Power!

  • All children can feel the petals of a flower against their skin in some way.
  • All children can smell a flower.
  • In literacy work, children can respond through the written and/or spoken word, or with symbols.
  • Children can feel the vibrations in the music.
  • Where English is not a first language, children can understand the development of the story through the illustrations and/or by listening to the music.
  • Flower Power! can be used to develop numeracy and basic operations in mathematics.

‘Stretch, Smile and grow...'

‘I like that the story got them to think laterally, and think about other things in their own lives which relate to them. So it’s not just a simple story. The children were coming out with comments about things they’d had to deal with, things that they’d heard about with other people and I like the link with Christianity, the life of Jesus as well. So yes, I really loved it.’ Mrs Linda Hack, Headteacher, now retired, FitzHerbert C of E Primary School, Fenny Bentley, Derbyshire.
